My rib cage is deformed

I've been feeling a dent in the right side of my rib cage for as long as I can remember. All this time, I thought that it was normal, and that's how rib cages are supposed to be. To be more exact, one of the bones in my right side isn't as far out as it's supposed to be.

That was until yesterday, when I had the extraordinary idea to actually compare the two sides of my ribs. And what do you know, the left side didn't have a dent.

The first thing I did was laugh my ass off for being so stupid. How the hell could I NOT have noticed it for so many years?

Next thing I did was some research on the internet. I didn't find much, except that rib cage deformities of that kind (there are some other more severe cases) aren't so uncommon, and most of the time it's just the way the rib cage has grew for some people. There is no need for treatment except in the case where there are chest pains and/or respiratory problems (cause it can limit lung expansion). I don't have any of these symptoms so I think I'll be alright.

I also found a video from a guy who seems to have something similar. Although mine is less visible.

Ive got something simmilar. . . and im really worried about it. Could you put a photo up where i could see how is it with yours?

Anonymous said...

I also have that as well slightly higher up but it is only one of my ribs. It's never caused my any problems and i even showed my doctor a few years ago and said there was nothing to worry about :)

hey thats cool how you are using my video..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISgeDEI5QwQ i have a more updated video and better quality

I also have something similar and I don't remember since when. It hurts sometimes when I do physical exercise. What is it caused by? What are the consequences? Is there a way to make it normal?

i have the same thing. i have tried to find more info on the internet, but it always pops up as petus evec-something. i'm a twin, so either my brother did this to me while in my mom's belly or it was destiny. i worry about sometime ,but everyone i talked to about it says its no big deal, you have nothing to worry about even my doc. didnt seem to care.

Anonymous said...

you know what, i have totally the same thing, i actually thought i was alone with this problem. mine seems to be progressing to be more dramatic and defined though, as time goes on. people I've asked have suggested it being a result of always sleeping on my side with my arm under me. so i swapped and this resulted in the other side developing! so now i just decided to start sleeping on my back, which has been the bet thiing. also my chest is uneven because of it... anyone know where i can get some information?

Hi i m from CT ....i have the same issue you do on my ribcage....started years ago...it got worse last year because i decide to work out ( lift weights), regular doctors doesnt seem to know much about it, even because I think there s nothing to worry about...but my concert is if it get worse ....i looked at your video ( thank you for posting it ) and it is the same thing. I will try anyway to go see a specialist at some point.

Anonymous said...

The main thing to avoid it to get worse is not to do anything that requires heavy lifting.

I'm 30 years old and my left rib is pushed out like there's something behind it. I can't lay on my left side at night. It finally dawned on my to the other day just to see how different both sides are and I can't believe I've never noticed before (neither has the Doc)still I don't know why its like this and I'm getting tired of putting up with it

Anonymous said...

Wow, i'm the same! i have it too, my chest is kinda like 'tunnel chest' with the dip in the middle and then my ribs stick out at the bottm =/ it has gotten slightly better as i've put on a more average weight. but its still visable. my left side is worse. i think' i'm going to work out on my stomuch and chest maybe it'll cover it up more.

wow i have the same thing. it doesnt hurt or anything thought. MY top ribs stick out so much. I hate wearing a bathing sut because of this. It make my whole stomach look wierd

you guys are lucky acually .. you should see my ribs .. like you know the bone in the front? that like is between all your ribs? .. well that whole thing is curved sideways and one side sticks way out making it look like one breast is bigger then the other one (like a lot bigger) and recently iv been having chest pains on the side thats stuck out like all over my chest .. so i have to wait till my doc can see me about it .. im always worryed that a lung will get pinched off or even my heart get squeezed so i try to sleep on my back .. it sucks really bad and i hope it dosent cause any problems so think of that when your scared to show a small dent lol ... i just wish my ribs were perfect .. im scared to be ruff now because my ribs feel tender and very bendable .. im even scared to sleep on the wrong side .. maybe its alright but im not sure yet if its natural or if i broke them as i was REALLY ruff a few years ago with football and stuff .. anyways i hope this helps you guys a little bit .. your storys have helped me knowing im not the only one worryed :)

i have the same sort of thing on my lower ribs on the right side of my stomach. i only noticed it in the last 2 years, and it has only botheed me since i have noticed it. i try not to worry about it, but it seems to be getting worse. i do sleep on my side alot and noticed that my arm fits perfectly in the dent, i guess ive slowly formed this shape in years of sleeping on my arm. i try to sleep on my back and stomach now, and have been doing so for about 3 months, no improvment yet. i dont really worry about it too much, although a solution would be great, its a bit selfish to care about the way you look when there is so much suffering going on. look towards your own future with love.

Anonymous said...

I have sort of the same thing as well
the bottom of my rib cage stick out a little and there is a dent in my right one
I've had it since a little kid and I'm thinking it could be from my bad posture back then

Anonymous said...

Lol... don't need to say. got same issue he? I do. it is not bad but getting worse when working out. Also noticed that experience more pain when putting on weight. I'm 27 now. Last 10 years it was not an issue but now it starts irritating me.
shame that noone posted anything useful in terms of treatment. I am thinking to open my cage and remove this 'sick bastard' rib ^_^ what the hell is causing this?

we should start a club or something

Unknown said...

We need to do something about this because there has to be a way to fix our ribcages. Mine has been irritating me for a while now and it feels like my lung capacity has lessend. Has anybody had any goood news to treat this situation of ours?

Anonymous said...

Yea i think we should.
Hey does anyones rib like on the ride side dents inward and the top looks like its out more than the left and tge bottom is stiking out, but the left side looks perfectly normal. ive been worrying bout this, and it all started wen i worked out for football. I stopped because of this and i really am kind oF woried.

Anonymous said...

haha i have the same exact thing. i never really noticed it until my gf was in bed next to me and noticed it.

me too,,,same problem.my left ribcage is higher than my right.i feel not normal about this...my doctor told me nothing to worry about but i feel pain sometimes.
thank you for this blog,it helps me knowing im not alone.. im afraid to get pregnant because of this... i really hope there's a treat for this condition...

Hi everyone. I am a 14 year old skinny boy and I have noticed a similar problem about my chest. when I was small like 6 and under, I always drank milk milk milk. One day on the playground a fell on a rubber soft floor and my arm snapped like someone could do it with his/her fingers. I thought milk was supposed to make my bones stronger. Well my ribs stick out on the bottom and cave in at the middle more on my right side(as if my heart is keeping the left side from caving in. I thought my ribs caved in like this because of my posture and my weak bones, I thought, were easily bent by this. My ribs are bendy in a weird way. I think because of my rib cage, my lungs cannot take in as much air as they could have if I did not have this problem. I think this is the reason I can barely run a mile in 11 minutes and everyone else does it in 6 minutes.

Anonymous said...

I am a 14 year old girl. I have a similar problem. My left lower part of my rib cage is dented in, and my right side isn't I just noticed like 3 days ago. I don't know how long I have had it. It hurts to laugh, to breathe deeply, to get up from sitting, to sit down, to jump, crunches, sit ups, and more types of exercises. I don't know whether or not to worry.

Anonymous said...

I have the same thing too! I also have this uncomfortable thing happen when i do crunches where the bones "click". It freaks me out and I worry that I may be damaging something on the inside. Also when I hunch over I get worried that since my rib cage is in farther it will damage my organs. I went to a doctor about it and they said it was ok and that it's just the "floating" ribs. She said it might help to have good posture.

Unknown said...

Well my ribs stick out on the bottom and cave in at the middle more on my right side - I have the sam thing. The doctores are too lazy to take X-ray, but I know something is wrong.
Is it only the frond of the the rib cage, or whole back?

I had very deep cave on 14-15 yeras, but I was very active kid and It improves a lot till 18-20 years.
It is not good enoght to be perfect bodybuilder

My ribs are VER strange! They like, curve round normally either side from my spine, but half way round, both sides curve in and then curve straight back out again in a triangular shape then the last past curves back in but in curves round and dips in at the chest. its VERY strange and i have a large dip in my chest and it now looks like i have 4 breasts.. only the 2 bumps either side of my ribs pop out a fair bit further then my breasts. I've had them for as long as i remember, and generally im not fussed about the look anymore, I've learnt to live with it, having a afro people look at me all the time anyways. But im worried whether one day when im older, wether this could escalate into a much larger problem then just look deformed. my posture is pretty bad anyways, but then i cant see this effecting my rib ara massively. Even just knowing the potential cause would be good, but knowing whether its dangerous and i should get it sorted would be alot better..

I'm a 30 year old female. I noticed mine after I had my 2 children and my breasts weren't the same. I have a seems to be like a hole above my right boob. I can you can feel the hole almost. I do sleep on my left side and everything on the left side of my rib cage seems larger? My breast bone just feels weird and it seems to be getting worse the older I get. I've seen 2 doctors that have said this is a natural deformity? (sorry for my spelling.) I want to have another doctor look at it. It's noticeable to me but not to my husband. I think it's disgusting.

i have a similar problem as you all do... my right rib cage has a dent in the middle a think i got hit on the cartilage and it mess up my ribs when i was little it doesnt hurt or nothing but it feels uncomfortable and i feel that im not breathing normally can anyone help me please i want 2 be a professional soccer player and obviosly im not going to make it like this im 18 yrs old

I also have a dent in my right side. About two years ago my brother was messing around and punched me right in the ribs, i got winded and my ribs hurt for a while. The dent was what was left. It used to bother me and i felt like i couldnt really breath when i was surfing and when i would fall and get winded on a big set my ribs on that side would experience moderate pain. My doctor said it wasnt a big deal...boobies

Hello all, you know this is about the only thread on the internet on this subject. I have the same thing as in the video. I found some info to help grow muscle over that area to hide it better. You can do pull ups which will work that specific area and over time stretch that part out and grow muscle over it, you can also do the workout where you take the bar with weight on it over your head and pull it down to your chest if you can imagine that. ITs in almost every excersize facility. you can do it forwards to where it goes over your front part of your chest or behind you pulling the bar behind your head.
There also a surgery I think that doctors can do that pull that indent out by purposly breaking your rib and placing holders in the best spot. If you have health coverage I would strongly suggest that, I dont though other wise I would have it done.

I am so glad im not alone in this topic!!! Except instead of my ribs having a sinking hole in it, it has a big bulge in it. Almost like a third boob. I can almost stick my finger up under it and feel the other side. I hate wearing tight shirts and bathing suits because it sticks out so much! HELP

ive got symilar problem lower ribs on boths sides go inwards instead of outwards been like that since being young, wehn i was 4 i used to do 100s of sit ups and thing the mscles may have pulled the ribs inthe positions they are in while they were still formaing when young, like the 16 year old said earlyer in this thread it looked like i had two dimples in the lower chest, my mates used to take the piss and say i had two sets of tits when we got changd for p.e at school, then in my late teens early twentys they went almost unoticable now ive hit 30 they are more pronounced and worce on the right side and not that noticabe in the other side, doctors ent me for chest exrays when i was young and the report called it lower scailing in the lower ribs????? ive been thinking about havin it corrected if im being honest it does bother me a little, i thought the only way it could be done is to remove all the lower ribs, or another way could be the same way they make bones in the lgs longer buy sergically drilling titanium posts in the bones and then having then tightend incrementally over moths to make them change shape, kinda like ahow a brace works on teath. here s a pic where its only realy noticable on one side. http://s948.photobucket.com/albums/ad326/nemodotshark/?action=view&current=fb2.jpg&newest=1

Yeah Mines deformed too, I asked the doctor he said everything is alright and nothing to worry about =D

Wow, pretty happy I stumbled upon this thread!! I'm a 25 year old female and, yes, I have the same problem many of you are describing. My rib cage is narrow (flat-normal) right under my breasts then kinda "scoops" out, almost like the ramp used for olympic ski jumping. It's more defined on the left side of my rib cage. It's huts to lay on my stomach on hard surfaces and I've noticed in the past that my ribs would randomly be sore and painful. I've often wondered if wearing bras has caused my ribs to deform this way. I am an average weight (if not on the slim side) however I have naturally very large breasts. Does it sound plausible that the weight caused by my bra over the years deform my ribs? I'm VERY critical about my body and I absolutely HATE it. Can I have surgery to fix it?....And YES to the self conscious bikini wearing :(

Anonymous said...

And, do other women with large breasts have a similar problem?

Fin said...

I kind of have the opposite, at the bottom of both the left and rid of my rib cage it sticks out hugely... If i run my hand down there's a huge bone sticking out and it's so noticable, the left section of my ribcage is also a few centimetres higher then my right, and over all my whole ribcage is just deformed. It kills my confidence and i really hate taking off my tshirt... I don't know whether it's related, but ever since birth my nose has like been naturally ''broken'' it looks like i've been punched in the face, but that could be something else... I don't know, it's just curious how quite a few bones in my body seemed to have developed wrong.. anyway i'm off to the doctors sometime in the next week to ask about it, i hope there's something they can do... i really do

Hi guys, I'm a 14 yr old male, and it's nice to see that other people have similar problems. Well, it's not nice that they have the problems, but you get what I mean. :P My breastbone is raised to about 2 or so cm higher than it should be, and while that may not sound much, it is very noticeable. Also, the 'corners' (bootom left and botoom right) of my ribs stick out, though my left much more than my right. Finally, the ribs on my right curve inwards slightly as they go down, while on my left they curge slightly away from me. :/

crap, i have somthing like that only it is tunnel chest. its like a dent in the upper chest.
The dent is here:

I have this same thing and I have thought I was a "special" person (disabilities), but I think it is not that big of a deal now. I just hope it doesn't cause pain to me because I do mixed martial arts and I don't want to quit because of some deformed rib cage dent in my right side.

I had some pain upper right rib cage after a bike crash recently. Then I noticed a distinct dent in my rib exactly where the pain was most intense. Went to Dr who took felt dent and took X rays. After looking ant X ray he said he saw nothing wrong. A day later they call back and say radiologist found a fracture in 8th anterior thoracic rib but that it was minor, don't worry about it. I think how can the see a frontal dent with an x ray looking straight at it? I'm seeing another orthopedic Dr. Dr's are sketchy. No harm in 2nd or 3rd opinions if you have reason to be skeptical, and I do.

Anonymous said...

I'm 16 and mines been there for practically forever. I never really noticed it till like I was 12 cuz mines very minor. It looks normal and everything but like the ribs in between my breasts, the right rib is just slightly higher than the left. And I know that that's not that bad. Actually, you don't notice it at all and it doesn't bother me. Only person who can see it is me since I know about it :) but basically it really freaked me out. My mom said it was nothing to worry about, but i always still felt bad and uncomfortable thinking maybe something was wrong with me but this helped me out a lot! :)

Mine is basically the same.. my left ribs are very pronounced about half way up to my sternum, but on the right there is a corresponding gap????
I'm thinking it may be postural, but doctors always give me the "its just a floating rib" spiel

Anonymous said...

I have one right under my chest on the right side. Im not that worried once you said theres no need for treatment unless its hurting. Its just weird and a little bit scary to me

Anonymous said...

yup... same problem on the lower right side and I just started working out. I've known it was there for a long time, but it just now started hurting and a couple of times even today it's like moved... like a joint popping... which hurt sometimes and not others... I'm nervous about working out still if it's going to become a serious problem. If I breathe in deeply it straightens out and you can't see it, but just regularly it still looks like a dent...

Anonymous said...

Hi, I'm a 16 year old boy and I have a problem that sounds a little too familiar after reading this thread. On either side of my sternum there are quite noticeable "dents", my left side looks significantly worse than my right. The dent on my left is much deeper/noticeable and also as it reaches my sternum there is a considerable bulge.
I noticed this problem a couple of years ago, but at the time I didn't think much of. But shortly after I noticed it I began to feel a sharp pain. I questioned my parents about it a while ago and they said it was nothing to worry about, but I don't believe them. I have also noticed that my farther seems to have something similar, so maybe it's a genetic thing.
When I first started getting the pain was when I had first started working out. When I made the connection between the two, I stopped working out, and I have not felt the pain since. But pain aside it still isn’t pretty to look at and at time it makes me feel very self-conscious.

Im 16, male and the bottoms of my rib cage protrude and there is an indention on the left side. I got tired of it not because others notice, but because I do. After I started working out, my pectoral muscles and abs have made an illusion of leveling the trunk of my body out. I do not know if this helps any, but at least I know I am not alone!

I have something similar, but something pops out of my rib i think its either cartilage or a bone. After Physical exercise i have pains in my rib. Is this ok?

I had a bad cough in sept 2010,my side/ front/ back right rib where so sore doc said I probably tore a muscle,my rib, it was sore and just didn't feel right till Nov 2011 but I still was cautious of hurting this again,I have now noticed a dent on right front side near the bottom of rib,it feels really uncomfortable (most of the time) as though its digging in to something it shouldn't,I have other pain and discomfort, achy feeling that ends up feeling like a stitch in my right side/ back and still discomfort from dented area at front, its been 3 weeks now, its DRIVING ME MAD!

MANNN finally i been wondering if i was the only human with this problem!! Its bad for my psyche i wish i could go to the beach and attract girls but i feel like my ribs hold me back thye just look so abnormal and im skinny so its even worse!! I wish there was some way to fix it its hard to sleep and i feel if i do physical things say football or mma that my ribs will break easily :( It really sucks but its nice to know im not alone...

I'm a 15 year old boy, and I am relieved I'm not the only one with this. I noticed I had 2 large indents in my sides when I was around 10, but looked back at some family pictures and saw that I had this when I was about 7 or 8. I am now just starting to feel pain. My holes are in the near the lower middle of my sides. I looked in the mirror again today and think I figured out the reason of my pain. My bottom 2 ribs look to have been joined together, while my right side hole's ribs are still separated. Both sides of my ribs used to be separated but now, at 15 and 3/4, it looks like my bottom left ribs joined together. I'm not sure if I should get surgery or see a doctor or what.

Anonymous said...

I noticed my ribs stoking out first when I was 13. Because I was getting sharp pains on my botum left ribs last year I was able to put my fingers under my ribs so I went to the Dr he said it was normal then start of this year it has gotten bigger. It was one rib two mouth ago it all equal to the length. Of my index finger now my middle finger I also have gained Asmara like simtoms and not being able to digest food sometimes and now I cannot eat all day and not real hungry I have been to the Dr so many time and they have found nothing. Last time I went i askedfor some deppreson pills because I was not Abel to sleep eat or work on my studys and other problems but it made me worse and I am haveinf afets from to mounths ago it is 1:34am and I probably. Wont get to sleep. Till 3 and I have had to go part time for my studys and have 7 weeks off so I have like failed my corse.

Anonymous said...

Same story here. This is exactly what I have, plus, to make matters worse, I'm very skinny so the indents are even more visible. I think my mom has the same thing but it's not that noticeable.
Fortunately, I don't feel any pain unlike other people here. However, I do have like a floating rib that I can "play" with. Yes, it's weird but it doesn't hurt at all. For me, it's mostly a matter of self consciousness. Probably the answer is to do sit ups or some other kind of muscle training exercises.

Okay guys, most of the stuff u say abt ur rib cages causes are crap, the reason is u get it at an age when u start growing, its normal mostly,i went to a doctor, not any doctor,i went to a physical doctor, and he proscribed me exercised to do,also i have problem with back so i do exercised that last 1 hour and more..u need to gain weight,do exercised,so ur abs like will cover up the places where it sticks out,u need to bulk up so that will cure all,and when u say u got like feeling it will break, nah it wont,ur over exagerating, myb its out,but wont get broken that easily.Don't worry,i am doing the treatment already for 2 years, and my ribs are barely visible :),there must be a physical doctor in every country.

Hey guys,

I've seen my doctor about this problem as well. After a series of x-rays and examinations of my rib cage (which is by the way somehow dented through a couple of ribs, middle to bottom), they concluded that I had no problems other than appearance. Only if you begin to have pain or respiratory problems that you should require surgery.
Their recommendation other than surgery is to simply work out, and avoid lifting heavy objects. If your pectoral dents with your rib cage (which it should), then look into following the instructions of this website:-

http://www.livestrong.com/article/434760-how-to-exercise-only-one-side-of-chest/

This will help exercise one side of the chest and can help "disguise" or cover up the dent. Sit ups is also a high recommendation as well.

Personally, my own rib cage problem seems to have gotten worse from when I first discovered it, but doctors now also recommend the listed options above.

Hope this will help anyone with the similar or the same problems.

From Will :)

I emphathize with everyone who has this anomaly(I personaly consider it a curse). I'm 61 yrs old and have had to endure this deformity all of my life. I hate summer and beaches because I have always felt like a freak when I wear a t-shirt or worse yet peel off my shirt.I experience serious shame and self conciousness in various social situations, especially during intimate encounters. But there is hope for you younger people who have chest deformities; There is the Nuss surgical proceedure and the Ravitch surgical proceedure. You can research the details online by entering "chest deformities".So hang in there and try not to get too demoralized.Modern medicine is making progress in correcting this sensititive problem. You are not alone.Good luck.

Guys i am also very worried about my ribs,i had not told about this to anyone.I am skinny so it will become prominent but today after reading the stories of other friends,i came to know that am not the only one.i hope that the situps technique will help me

Anonymous said...

Sometimes it's a simple matter of certain ribs being smaller than normal. It can be an appearance issue only, rather than a health problem. This should show on X-ray. Why this happens? Your guess is as good as mine. Evolution in action?

Anonymous said...

Hey everybody. I don'y know if anyone's still on this but whatever. I don't know but what from I can conclude I have the same problem as all of you except mine was cause from my younger brother when we were little; we were playing and he jumped off of the couch onto me. That's the only thing I can suspect it was. My entire rib cage is screwed up because of this my right side is pushed out by a few mm's (I'm Canadian, it would be about the size of a pencil) and of course there's the dent it looks like a baseball imprint. My real reason I'm here is to see if anybody knows if there's a surgery to correct this because it looks really effed up. I'm going on my second year of working out but it still looks screwed up. I'm planning on being a model and you can't have a dent in your rib cage. I know it's pretty selfish of me to want to fix this just for an ascetic reason when others are in actual pain but I just want this to go away. Does anyone know what kind of surgery I could possibly get to correct this? ohh and one last thing its halfway up my ribs so I don't know if that changes anything or not.

Anonymous said...

I have something similar but my whole ribcage is deformed, the left side on the top half is raised and same to the right bottom of it, I've never had any pains, and I thought I was the only one having this problem

Anonymous said...

I've always had it but never really thought much of it, but there is a dent on the right side of my rib cage. It doesn't hurt or anything, but it feels like some of the ribs at the bottom have actually folded/curled under!!! I really would like to see an x-Ray of it.

Unknown said...

Wow awesome I thought I was alone!! Mine is pretty bad too I get insecure and never take off my shirt and it's hard to really get intimate with a girl who wants to touch me all over I never let them really touch me around that area :( I hate it I wish I could be normal I also think could it affect my lungs or heart? If I get hit hard enough on the heart I could die since that part is pushed down close to my heart ugh it's crazy if you guys are still around it would be nice to talk to ppl with the same problem this is a curse for real idk how The man up there lived his whole life with it but it looks like we have no choice I've worked out abs too and it actually forms my abs into a weird shape as well so there is no way around this for some reason it looks like we who have this are all skinny ppl too but gaining weight hides it just a little

Anonymous said...

Finally, I don't feel alone in this. 6'2, 145lb, 18 y/o here, really self-concious about it, not really health-wise because it doesn't stop from doing any activity, or give me any pain or breathing problems, althought it's a bit sensitive. My dent/gap is in the lower right side of my rib cage, not too noticeable, but not as normal as my left side. I guess my problem is more with how unaesthetically it looks, and by reading some of this comments working out may not be a great solution. but oh well, I guess I'll just have to deal with it for the rest of my life

Anonymous said...

I have at least two of my ribs on the left side of my chest that curve inward. I never thought much of it, yes, it weirded me out slightly, but I was fine with it. But now as I get older when I do some workout/exercise I get a pain where it is, and it's really annoying. I'm just glad I'm not the only person who is having issues like this.

Unknown said...

I have the same thing but not as visible as yours and I'm 13 but I think it was when I hit the ground in baseball to hard.

Unknown said...

I'm 31 years old and have noticed the ribs on my lower right side (just under my right breast) curving inward since I was a teenager. It's very noticeable to me, but my husband, whom i've been with for over 10 years never noticed it until I physically pointed it out. I used to worry a lot about it, but it's most likely just how they grew. I have a lot of pain overall, but I have fibromyalgia which causes a lot of that. I'm wondering if anyone who has seen a doctor relating to this also has costochondritis-a painful inflammation of the rib cartilage (it usually goes away after a few weeks/months but can be chronic as well) I suspect the abnormal shape of my ribcage might be contributing to it, although costochondritis is also sometimes linked to fibromyalgia.
Anyway, other than that, the biggest annoyance with the indent is how it makes my bras fit. The underwire or elastic always wants to dig up further on the indented side. I know that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, but bra-wearing is not super comfortable in the first place.
I can't imagine going through surgery to correct this since my recovery time would be much longer than normal (because of the fibro) and my tolerance to pain meds is outrageously high. I think it's just something i'll have to live with. I do have asthma, but it has gotten better as i've gotten older, and my heart function is fine.
To those of you really worried, trust your doctors and get a second or third opinion if you still don't feel comfortable with what they tell you. You need to advocate for yourself when it comes to your health. If you really want an xray or other tests to put your mind at ease, tell them so. Most will understand what a weight off your shoulders it will be to know that everything is going to be fine (besides the aesthetic component which we are all our own biggest critics of)
Good luck to you all!
(And please, if anyone else has had costochondritis with this, please let me know-i'm just more curious than anything)

I know you posted this years ago, I really hope you are feeling better about things now. I just wanted to say that in case you didn't already find out some other way, the chances of your bras causing this is slim to none. Changing the shape of your actual ribcage without surgery is not an easy task, pretty much the only way would be very extensive corset-training which isn't very safe or recommended medically-speaking.
I do sympathize with you though, the indent in my right ribcage is right under my breast and can make bras super annoying when the underwire or elastic creeps into it, and it makes finding a good fit more difficult.
Anyway, I wish you the best and hope you've become less self-conscious, remember-we're all our own biggest critics!

Oh! I forgot to mention, the show "Botched" on the E! network featured a guy with a similar problem this season if anyone wants to check it out, it was pretty interesting.

I have a problem like that also. But instead I have a indent in the middle of my chest. Its very noticeable when wearing certain clothes. I was born with it. And I haven't grown out of it yet. But my problem doesn't bother me I try to live my life like any other person. I think its good to stay positive, look at yourself and think, this is how God designed me. I learned to be proud of how I look. ☺ and just think, if other people have a problem or they don't like it. Turn your head and ignore it because its not their body. Not everyone will accept the way we look. Not everyone accepted the way I was. But the people who do accept you for who you are, they're the kind of people you need to keep in your life. ;)

@Katlyn Higgins: I am early in the process of medical evaluation of my "inverted ribs", the ~8-10?th ribs on my left side. I had costalchondritis as a teenager and a fractured sternum.
Have you had any more information on the condition?

Thanks for sharing so far.

I guess this thread is old but I've just recently started noticing weird sudden changes in my ribs and since I'm 19 i don't think this is a normal growth spurt. The ribs connected to my sternum have bulged out and there is a huge bump when compared to the opposite side. One of my ribs specifically sticks out extra far. My lower ribs also stick out on the same side and they have shifted towards the side of my body. Please help me somebody. I have developed severe insomnia because of this I don't even know the last time I got a good nights sleep. It worries me so much. There is bad pain sometimes.

I've been in an accident about two weeks ago, and i hadn't thought that my rib was broken, but it seems that it was, and now there is a small dent in that area, and it hurts when stretching/exercising, can someone help me? Do i need to go to a doctor? Im really worried, and have yet to tell my parents.
